49ers Training Camp Battle No. 2: Mohamed Sanu vs. Jauan Jennings

Unlike at running back where there are two potential starters vying for one job, the 49ers don’t have a clear-cut answer as to who will wind up assuming the No. 3 spot on the wide receiver depth chart.

Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel are cemented in as WRs 1 and 2 for the regular season, but the Niners entered 2021 essentially with a wide-open competition to fill the void left by now-New England Patriots wideout Kendrick Bourne, who left via free agency.

Fortunately, OTAs gave us a clearer indication of the favorites for this critical role.

Of the many depth wide receivers on San Francisco’s offseason roster, Mohamed Sanu and Jauan Jennings seemed to be the ones separating the most.

Sanu, the crafty veteran who’ll turn 32 years old, had a brief stint with the 49ers a year ago but excelled under Kyle Shanahan back with the Atlanta Falcons in 2016.

Jennings, meanwhile, was one of those players who needed more offseason work during his rookie 2020 campaign. The lack of minicamps and OTAs clearly affected him, but that doesn’t look to be the case any longer.

Both players could make the 53-man roster, yes. But whoever assumes the No. 3 spot on the depth chart will have far more responsibility.
