49ers Training Camp Battle No. 3: Raheem Mostert vs. Trey Sermon

San Francisco is going to field both running backs, Raheem Mostert and Trey Sermon, pretty extensively in 2021.

The only question is which player winds up being more prominently featured.

Mostert missed time during OTAs with a knee injury, which led to Sermon getting plenty of work with the first-team unit. The former Ohio State star who came up big in key games for the Buckeyes last year seems to be a natural fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Mostert, meanwhile, is 29 years old, entering a contract year and is coming off an injury-plagued season that forced him to miss eight games.

Shanahan has typically used a running back rotation, so it’s likely both Sermon and Mostert wind up seeing plenty of touches this season.

Yet the pecking order on the depth chart is anything but certain right now, and both players could wind up assuming a starting role between now and Week 1.

It should make for a provocative camp battle.
