Takeaway No. 2: 49ers have a full on quarterback battle

The State of the Franchise talked about a lot of different players, from the wide receiver corps to the running back room. George Kittle even brought up EDGE Nick Bosa after Fred Warner forgot to mention him.

One would think, that when asked about the state of an NFL team, the quarterbacks would be mentioned.

But that was a completely avoided conversation. That was intentionally done by the 49ers organization.

They knew if they brought up quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance, that would overshadow anything else that was said. The Niners are also effectively looking for a way to get out from under Jimmy G’s sizable contract to free up salary cap space, probably to extend players like Warner and, down the line, Bosa.

This is why Kyle Shanahan has said he is not opposed to having a rookie quarterback start, which he has done before with Robert Griffin III back in 2012 with Washington.

Both Garoppolo and Lance are going to be put to the test this year. May the best quarterback win.
