3 simple roster moves 49ers should make before training camp
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers don’t need much tweaking to their 90-man offseason roster, but these three simple moves could help a lot before training camp.
For the most part, we’re not likely to see too many drastic changes to the San Francisco 49ers‘ 90-man offseason roster between now and the start of training camp at the end of July.
Sure, there could always be some back-end moves, such as changing out the 89th or 90th player on the roster for someone else who might provide a bit more competition and intrigue when camp kicks off.
But as far as blockbusters go, don’t expect anything shocking or big.
The lack of first-round NFL Draft picks in 2022 and 2023 likely prevent general manager John Lynch from executing any massive deal anyway, and this isn’t usually the time of year when teams dish out high-profile picks for players on the trade block.
Unless it involves transactions like the Tennessee Titans’ one for wide receiver Julio Jones, and even that only included a max of a second-round pick.
Still, Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have never shied away from trying to improve the team however possible. Even if they’re satisfied with the players they have on the roster, they’ll make moves when the opportunities present themselves.
Fortunately, there are still some easy-to-make moves out there from San Francisco’s vantage point, and none of them should be viewed as jeopardizing the 49ers’ long-term future, both in terms of draft compensation and salary cap space.
As the Niners prepare for training camp, Lynch should consider executing these three simple moves to help bolster the roster.
