49ers Running Backs (5)

HB Raheem Mostert

HB Trey Sermon

HB Elijah Mitchell

HB Wayne Gallman

FB Kyle Juszczyk

PUP: Jeff Wilson, Jr

The injury to Jeff Wilson shakes this group up just a little bit, but not a lot.

Raheem Mostert and Trey Sermon figured to be the top-two options at the position heading into the 2021 season regardless of Wilson’s status, with Sermon building up his role as the year goes on, as he and fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell are the only halfbacks under contract past this season.

This allows Mitchell and newly signed Wayne Gallman to both make the team, as Wilson goes to the PUP list to start the season with his meniscus tear.

Those two will also fight for snaps as the change-of-pace back, although ideally, you have to think the 49ers brass would hope to see the rookie win that battle, providing them with a proven, long-term set of options at the position with Sermon, Mitchell, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who is back after signing a new five-year deal this offseason.

Once Wilson is eligible to come off the PUP list after Week 6, there may be some intrigue, but losing the former North Texas back to start the season all but sets this group in stone before training camp even starts.

Only former undrafted free agent JaMycal Hasty stands even a small chance of shaking this up this summer.
