Unless you’re going to land an MVP-like candidate at quarterback, a smart fantasy football strategy is to sleep on signal-callers until the middle or late rounds.

And if you’re targeting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, you better be doing it as a QB2 on the roster to cover a bye week, nothing more.

Garoppolo’s 14.12 ADP is the least among all ranked quarterbacks by Fantasy Football Calculator, meaning a dilapidated Detroit Lions offense is providing a better context for quarterback Jared Goff (14.08) than a good San Francisco offensive cast is for Jimmy G.

Perhaps owners are bearish on Garoppolo because of his injury history after missing almost all of 2018 with an ACL tear and all but six games last season with ankle setbacks. Or, they’re wondering whether or not rookie quarterback Trey Sermon will take over the job sooner than later.

For now, though, Garoppolo is going to start. And when healthy, he’s shown the ability to be at least competent enough for favorable matchups and to cover a bye week. All one needs to do is look back at his near-4,000 yards passing from 2019 to see why Jimmy G can be statistically favorable.

Sure, Garoppolo will have those boneheaded interceptions on a regular basis, and that’s a reason to be bearish, too.

But if you need to find a No. 2 option to support a starter on the bye and are a Garoppolo homer, few would fault you if you used your final fantasy pick on Jimmy G.
