49ers biggest winners, losers from first week of 2021 OTAs
By Peter Panacy
Loser: 49ers RB Jeff Wilson Jr.
According to reports, Jeff Wilson suffered a torn meniscus during individual weight workouts, which required him to have surgery.
As a result, he’ll miss four to six months and likely won’t be anywhere close to being ready for the start of the regular season.
It’s a tough break for San Francisco’s excellent fill-in running back, who rushed for well over 100 yards in two of the three games he started last year. Considering he’s also a free agent in 2022, suffering this injury now could potentially cut into his chances to capitalize on a quality deal next season.
If there’s some good news, though, the 49ers are going to stash Wilson on the physically unable-to-play list right now, and he’ll probably wind up being considered for activation towards the middle portion of the regular season.
Depending on how fresh and healthy this group of players is, the Niners may need Wilson to provide some reinforcement.
At the same time, though, if the current crop of San Francisco running backs is performing at a high level by the time Wilson is scheduled to be activated, it could potentially translate to him being left off the active roster.
