O-linemen currently on the 49ers offseason roster

It’s common for teams to have two or even three full tiers of offensive linemen on their offseason rosters, and the 49ers will be no different in fielding first-, second- and third-string units during OTAs, minicamps, training camp and the three-game preseason this year.

But the biggest challenge will be whittling down the crop of O-linemen into eight, perhaps nine rostered players ahead of Week 1.

Removing the likely group of first-team starters, it’s not hard to see why there’ll be some tight competition for the handful of depth spots among these players currently on the team’s offseason roster:

  • Jake Brendel
  • Daniel Brunskill
  • Shon Coleman
  • Tom Compton
  • Alfredo Gutierrez
  • Corbin Kaufusi
  • Alex Mack
  • Mike McGlinchey
  • Colton McKivitz
  • Jaylon Moore
  • Weston Richburg
  • Dakoda Shepley
  • Justin Skule
  • Laken Tomlinson
  • Isaiah Williams
  • Trent Williams

Richburg already reworked his contract this offseason, and his post-June 1 retirement should net another $1 million in cap savings towards this season, totaling approximately $3.5 million in cap savings for the year and over $9 million in savings in 2022.

For now, he’s on the roster.

Meanwhile, Brendel and Coleman both opted out last season because of the pandemic, so their one-year deals essentially carry over into 2021 where they’ll be given chances to compete for one of three, possibly four reserve spots on the 53-man roster.

And those backup battles will be the primary focal point for this unit leading up to the regular season.
