Running backs currently on 49ers roster

San Francisco had its fair share of free agents this offseason. While the team did keep a lot of its pending free agents entering 2021, one it did lose was running back Jerick McKinnon, who recently signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. McKinnon was anticipated to be a huge part of the offense when he signed with the 49ers in 2018, but unfortunately due to injuries, that didn’t end up happening.

With McKinnon leaving, and the Niners signing former New York Giants runner Wayne Gallman Jr., there isn’t that much experience in this position group. Now while this is a bit of a concern, having young guys in this position group is actually a good thing.

The running back position is a very demanding position to play, but to have young guys ready to step in when needed is huge in keeping everyone fresh. It will also hopefully help players not overplay to the point where they end up getting injured.

Let’s take a look at who is on the roster right now:

  • Raheem Mostert
  • JaMycal Hasty
  • Trey Sermon
  • Jeff Wilson Jr.
  • Wayne Gallman Jr.
  • Elijah Mitchell
  • Kyle Juszczyk
  • Josh Hokit

Now, Juszczyk hasn’t been mentioned yet because, while he is a fullback, his role is a lot more than just a standard fullback. He does a lot to keep the offense running when he is out on the field.

Hokit is there to back him up in case of an injury.

While there is a lot of young talent, there are a couple of players who have some very valuable experience.
