Predicting 49ers Week 1 cornerback depth chart

All this would change if the 49ers end up bringing Richard Sherman back. As of now, though, he remains unsigned and therefore not a part of the Niners’ current roster plans.

With regards to a Week 1 depth chart? This probably makes the most sense:

  1. Jason Verrett
  2. Emmanuel Moseley
  3. K’Waun Williams
  4. Dontae Johnson
  5. Ambry Thomas
  6. Deommodore Lenoir

Thomas has the kick-return experience, and San Francisco does have a void there. That’s a plus.

And Johnson is listed above the two rookies for a reason. While the fanbase might not be enamored with him, the 49ers sure seem to appreciate his versatility and experience as both a boundary option and as someone who can support Williams as a reserve nickel.

Putting it simply, if Johnson is on the roster, he’ll be listed ahead of both Thomas and Lenoir for now. Yet if the Niners re-sign Sherman, Johnson is likely the one who gets cut as a corresponding move.

Unless one of the two rookies wind up completely bombing in training camp and/or the preseason.

There’s another factor worth keeping in mind, too. The 31 other teams’ roster cuts before Week 1 are likely to generate some potentially interesting waiver claims and free-agent adds, including cornerback, which could shake things up as well.

That’s a complete unknown for now, but keep it in mind as the regular season draws near.
