49ers score well, Seahawks fall short in NFC West draft grades
By Peter Panacy
NFC West draft grades: Arizona Cardinals
- LB Zaven Collins, Tulsa (No. 16 overall)
- WR Rondale Moore, Purdue (No. 49)
- CB Marco Wilson, Florida (No. 136)
- DE Victor Dimukeje, Duke (No. 210)
- CB Tay Gowan, UCF (No. 223)
- S James Wiggins, Cincinnati (No. 243)
- C Michal Menet, Penn State (No. 247)
The Arizona Cardinals needed a good deal of help within their secondary despite bringing aboard veteran cornerback Malcolm Butler during the offseason. And it would have made sense if Arizona had started a run on cornerbacks in Rounds 1 or 2, although the Cardinals do get some good value in Marco Wilson and Tay Gowan, who can compete to earn primary depth spots on the roster.
James Wiggins, meanwhile, is an underrated safety who could have gone much higher than No. 243 overall.
Rondale Moore is an intriguing and potentially explosive wide receiver who’s a scoring threat every time he touches the ball. Paired with wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, this duo could be awfully scary to teams like the 49ers, who struggled with Hopkins already in Week 1 last year.
Trading a third-round pick before the draft for former Las Vegas Raiders center Rodney Hudson was smart, and he’ll upgrade what was previously a questionable Cardinals offensive line.
Zaven Collins was an interesting pickup, though, and it was probably a bit of a reach knowing full well there were other areas of need and starting-caliber cornerbacks on the board.
Arizona improved via the draft, but it’s still hard to say whether or not it got into a position where it’ll overtake other NFC West squads like the Niners, Seahawks or Los Angeles Rams.
