Loser: 49ers safety Marcell Harris

Backup safety Marcell Harris was likely already on the roster bubble before the NFL Draft, particularly after San Francisco inked veteran free-agent safety, Tavon Wilson, previously.

Wilson’s pass-coverage skills far outpace those of Harris, who despite his solid efforts against the run has remained a liability against the pass ever since being drafted in 2018, finds himself potentially pushed down the depth chart even further after the 49ers selected USC safety Talanoa Hufanga in Round 5.

Hufanga likely won’t start right away at strong safety. That job still belongs to the veteran, Jaquiski Tartt, who returns on a one-year deal. But Tartt’s injury history in recent seasons mandates the Niners have some quality backups.

Previously, it was Harris and Tarvarius Moore. Yet Moore’s speed, in spite of his own coverage struggles, likely keep him safer.

Like Wilson, Hufanga’s pass-coverage skills are on a much higher trajectory than those of Harris.

Tacking on fellow safety Jimmie Ward, the Niners have six safeties in position for probably four spots on the 53-man roster.

While Wilson could also be tabbed as a potential loser here, Harris’ tenure and hope likely come to a close by the time Week 1 roster cuts are announced.
