The 49ers made another trade, this time moving up to No. 88 overall via division-rival Rams to select Ohio State running back Trey Sermon.

San Francisco 49ers safety Jacquiski Tartt announced the No. 88 overall pick the team got via a trade from the Los Angeles Rams.

And with the pick, the Niners took Ohio State running back Trey Sermon.

The Niners made their third offensive pick of the draft after selecting North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance at No. 3 overall in the first round and Notre Dame offensive lineman Aaron Banks at No. 48 overall in the second round.

The earlier trade made with the Las Vegas Raiders allowed the Niners to move up earlier in the third round, as they used the fourth-round selection received from Raiders and their own fourth-round pick to make the move from No. 102 to No. 88:

In Sermon, the 49ers get another running back to add to their stable of rushers that already includes Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, and recently signed Wayne Gallman, but the selection of the former Buckeye at this point in the draft may lead to a camp battle depending on whether head coach Kyle Shanahan wants to keep four tailbacks on his 53-man roster.

Plus those currently rostered runners are all pegged for free agency in 2022.

Sermon fits the 49ers’ offense well, as he’s a one cut-and-go type of back, something Shanahan values in his runners. But he stands as a rare Shanahan drafted running back, who hasn’t taken a back since he swung and missed on former Utah rusher Joe Williams in the 2017 draft.

The newest Niner isn’t the fastest of runners, but he is decisive and should be able to take advantage of the holes San Francisco’s offensive line should be able to create given the quality Banks added to the likes of Trent Williams, Laken Tomlinson, Alex Mack, and Mike McGlinchey.

Sermon will have every opportunity to be successful in Shanahan’s offense, and if the rooke distances himself from the rest of the pack, look for him to look like a steal at this point in the draft.
