Round 2, Pick No. 33 Overall (from Jaguars): 49ers select cornerback Greg Newsome II, Northwestern

In the days before the draft, the Niners added running back Wayne Gallman and defensive linemen Arden Key and Maurice Hurst, lessening the need for John Lynch to find some quality depth pieces on day three of the draft.

And since we mentioned there’d be some wheeling and dealing in this mock draft, Lynch subsequently moves up from the No. 43 overall spot in a move with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including San Francisco’s Round 2 pick and the No. 117 overall pick in Round 4 to get the Jags’ top choice in the second round.

With the newly acquired pick, the 49ers select Northwestern cornerback Greg Newsome II.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Newsome looks to be the perfect fit for a zone-style defense, although his press-man skills aren’t lacking at all. And while he wasn’t a ballhawk over his three collegiate years, registering just one interception, Newsome has all the skills to be a true shutdown corner at the pro level.

Admittedly, it was a bit of a shock to see him fall out of Round 1, but he certainly wouldn’t have lasted until the 43rd pick the Niners initially had.

Cornerback is still a need for San Francisco, particularly with Richard Sherman now out of the fray, and both Jason Verrett and K’Waun Williams back solely on one-year deals.

Newsome looks to be a plug-and-play starter, and the 49ers would be more than happy to steal him away through this relatively easy trade-up move with the Jaguars.
