49ers news: 4 players who could switch jersey numbers
By Peter Panacy
No. 2: 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett
It would be cool to suggest second-year defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw could revert from his NFL-level No. 99 jersey to his collegiate No. 3. But the NFL rule change didn’t extend that far, and Kinlaw wore No. 99 at South Carolina anyway.
But another defender who could easily shake up his jersey number selection is veteran cornerback Jason Verrett, who has bounced back and forth between Nos. 22 and 27 during his time with both the 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers.
Verrett wore No. 2 when he was back at TCU building a resume that would propel him to the Chargers’ first-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
And considering Verrett has rediscovered a rejuvenated career with the Niners after dealing with so many injuries earlier in his pro career, a fresh start with his new number, No. 2, might be a great way to celebrate it.
Currently, backup quarterback Josh Rosen is wearing No. 2. But like Josh Johnson, Josh Rosen might not make San Francisco’s 53-man roster, and it’s not likely the 49ers would prefer Rosen keep the number assigned to him when he was plucked off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad late last year anyway.
No, give that number to Verrett. He’s done far more to earn it.
