49ers grab Justin Fields, build around him in mock NFL Draft
By Peter Panacy
Round 6, Pick No. 194 Overall: 49ers select offensive tackle Alaric Jackson, Iowa
If there’s one thing for certain, we know Kyle Shanahan likes players stemming from Iowa’s offense. George Kittle and now-Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard are two prime examples.
The run-heavy approach works in favor of Iowa’s latest tackle prospect, Alaric Jackson, who has fallen considerably down draft boards after being considered a safe day-two prospect late in 2020.
Consistency has seemed to plague Jackson the most, although his movement skills from side to side make him a much better fit in a zone-style system.
Perhaps that’s what the Niners see as his upside.
True, San Francisco already re-signed Trent Williams at left tackle and will have right tackle Mike McGlinchey for at least one more season. But there’s a potential long-term need to replace McGlinchey, contingent on the 49ers picking up his fifth-year option, and the current depth for a swing tackle isn’t necessarily there.
Jackson’s experience and fit within the system make him a good fit late in the draft.
