Round 5, Pick No. 172 (from Saints): 49ers select EDGE Wyatt Hubert, Kansas State

While there’s still hope the 49ers get back EDGE Dee Ford from a nearly year-long absence because of a back injury last year, the smarter approach would be to supplement the pass-rush department behind EDGE Nick Bosa with some additional talent.

San Francisco already brought aboard EDGE Samson Ebukam in free agency this offseason. But smart general managers know it’s always wise to add another pass-rusher when you think your team has enough already.

Kansas State EDGE Wyatt Hubert doesn’t fit the bill for an every-down rusher, and he lacks a general array of pass-rushing moves. That said, he has a relentless motor and won’t quit until the whistle.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Wildcat was productive, too, registering 8.5 sacks last season with 13 tackles for a loss. And while he might not have the speed to play on the outside, also lacking the functional strength to thrive inside, Hubert does have the tenacity to make his presence felt on the field.

If there’s one way to make Justin Fields even more prolific, it’s to have a solid defense. And those kinds of defenses never shy away from investing in the pass rush.
