NFL Draft Pick No. 31: Jalen Mayfield, Offensive Tackle, Michigan

The Chiefs cut both their starting tackles in a cap-saving effort, but their only move for the position was to re-sign Mike Remmers to fill one of the positions. This is not enough, and they need to invest in bolstering the position to win the Super Bowl again.

Michigan offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield didn’t have the best 2020, struggling with injury and unable to build on a solid 2019 season where he managed to hold his own with EDGE Chase Young.

That said he was still solid, and his true potential may be more like his 2019 form than the 2020 one.

Mayfield is more of a right tackle in the NFL rather than someone who could play both roles, but that won’t be too much of an issue for the Chiefs who need to bookend both ends of the line.

If you look at his 2019 tape, Mayfield has strength and speed in ample supply. He was able to stifle Young by using his speed to get in position and his strength to either neutralize pass-rushing moves or to knock him off his line. He could be a nice value pick.
