49ers NFL Draft 2021: 4 slot receiver prospects to target
By Peter Panacy
49ers Target No. 2: Amari Rodgers, Clemson
One of the staples within Kyle Shanahan’s offense is the ability to pick up yards after the catch, and few in college football did better than Clemson wide receiver Amari Rodgers.
Rodgers, 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds, has a stout build, not unlike San Francisco’s third-year receiver, Deebo Samuel, and Rodgers never hesitates to use that frame to bully smaller nickel defensive backs.
If anything, Rodgers could continue with that ability at the pro level, too, particularly when facing single-man coverage.
Rodgers finished his four-year collegiate career with the Tigers posting 2,144 receiving yards on 181 receptions with 15 touchdowns including an impressive 2020 campaign that saw him record over 1,000 yards and seven scores.
There are some concerns, such as a previous ACL tear in early 2019, although it didn’t impact his season that year too much. His route-running skills need some refinement, and he doesn’t have top-end speed.
That said, Rodgers’ physicality could prove to be a great boost to the 49ers offense.
