Analysis

Intangibles are always something a coach obsesses over. The little things that involve no physical talent but are instead a product of the personality of the draft prospect can often be a big factor with teams.

This is especially true of the quarterback position, where they always have to be a leader. The draft crop this year is somewhat of a mixed bag.

Mac Jones is the best candidate by far in this regard, as he’s frequently mentioned as a locker room leader at Alabama who’s universally loved by his teammates and coaches. He works hard and he’s a smart player.

Trey Lance and Justin Fields are more or less even in this regard, as they’re considered to be good character guys who did what they had to in college. The difference between them and Jones, however, is nobody is raving about their intangibles like they are with Jones.

Zach Wilson is a bit of a character concern, as he’s considered to be a bit of a brat and not really a locker room leader. On the positive side, he’s noted as a smart and competitive player on the field who has his teammates playing hard under him.
