49ers Can’t-Miss Prospect No. 3: Quarterback Trey Lance

North Dakota State’s quarterback, Trey Lance, is not as polished as the other quarterbacks atop this year’s NFL Draft class, but Lance is nonetheless very athletically gifted. He loves to run with his legs, picking up 1,100 rushing yards back during his lone dynamic season with the Bison, 2019.

In many ways, Lance reminds some fans and pundits of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kapernick in that regard.

On top of that, Lance passed for nearly 2,800 yards back in 2019 with 33 passing touchdowns against zero interceptions. As far as protecting the ball, Lance has displayed that quite well.

The only problem, however, is that 2019 season was the sole one in which Lance showed off his talents with regularity. He didn’t play in 2020, so all the game tape and on-field analysis is relatively limited.

But what was on display was awfully special.

Lance could be described as a very athletic quarterback who just needs to polish up a bit, perhaps even sitting behind Jimmy Garoppolo for a full season before eventually taking over in 2022.

While Lance’s floor is lower than the other quarterbacks already listed, it’s worth arguing he has a higher ceiling as far as pure athleticism goes.
