The 49ers just engineered a massive NFL Draft blockbuster trade, according to Adam Schefter, meaning Jimmy Garoppolo’s days are likely numbered.

Well, San Francisco 49ers fans, a lot of the speculation about what the team will do early in the 2021 NFL Draft just got answered.

According to a blockbuster report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday, the Niners are moving up from No. 12 overall in the draft order to No. 3 via a move with the Miami Dolphins, who held that pick, courtesy of the Houston Texans.

Talk about a massive shift:

The Dolphins subsequently moved the No. 12 pick in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, but Niners fans aren’t going to worry too much about that.

No, instead the speculation will ramp up insanely with regards to what it means for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his immediate future.

49ers wouldn’t have made this NFL Draft trade unless they wanted a quarterback

San Francisco is going to grab a quarterback with that No. 3 overall pick. There’s no other scenario that makes sense, and even NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco is behind that logic:

Schefter also reported the 49ers are committed to Garoppolo for now, the source telling the ESPN insider, “Jimmy is here to stay. He’s our guy this year.”

If that’s the case, one can easily assume the Niners are willing to grab a quarterback at No. 3 overall and let him develop behind Garoppolo in 2021, not unlike what the Kansas City Chiefs did with their then-rookie quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, back in 2017 when he sat behind then-Chiefs starting QB Alex Smith.

Smith was subsequently moved the following offseason.

The 2021 NFL Draft is awfully top-heavy with quarterbacking talent. Most NFL big boards rank out the following prospects in this order:

  1. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson
  2. Zach Wilson, BYU
  3. Justin Fields, Ohio State
  4. Trey Lance, NDSU
  5. Mac Jones, Alabama

Lawrence, Wilson and Fields are all expected to be taken within the top 10, perhaps even the top five with Lawrence and Wilson going one and two to the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, respectively.

Jones, meanwhile, is rumored to be targeted in the teens.

But Fields is now the player who seemingly rises up the 49ers’ interest boards. There would be almost zero reason to assume he would fall to No. 12 overall, and now it looks as if head coach Kyle Shanahan is zeroing in on Fields to forever change the franchise.

All the while, making Jimmy G a lame-duck candidate to hold the line for at least one more season.

There’s certainly going to be plenty of ramifications from this move for a while, so be sure to keep posted. Things just got massively interesting for the Niners if they weren’t already.
