Round 5, Pick No. 180 Overall (Compensatory): 49ers select quarterback Kellen Mond, Texas A&M

Yes, Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond was still on the FanSpeak draft board when the 49ers had their fifth-round compensatory pick. So if you’re doing the whole “no way Mond is there in Round 5” argument, blame FanSpeak. Not me.

Assuming Mond falls, of course, the Niners do have a need to revamp their quarterback room behind Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. Jimmy G’s backups, Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard, are both free agents. And even if the team commits to another QB on the roster, Josh Rosen, it would still be wise to land someone who could at least push Garoppolo in 2021.

Perhaps longer.

Mond is a great prospect to land on day three of the NFL Draft. The 2021 Senior Bowl MVP should be considered a dual-threat quarterback, although he doesn’t use his legs automatically when the play breaks down.

There are concerns about Mond’s field vision, yet he does have the accuracy, touch and arm power to suggest he could fit well within a system tailored to his strengths.

At worst a developmental backup, and at best a potential long-term starter, getting Mond in Round 5 would be a total steal from a value standpoint.
