NFL Draft: 1 cornerback 49ers can target in each round
SF 49ers Round 5 cornerback: Chase Lucas, Arizona State
Now we get to the boom-or-bust sort of prospects who could prove to either be a savvy pick or a player who’s out of the league in quick time. Chase Lucas flashed some potential at Arizona State, but does have some questions at the next level.
Lucas is undersized at 6-foot-0 and 175 pounds and needs to bulk up for the NFL, but he did record five pass deflections in only four games for Arizona State last season. Lucas also recorded 11 tackles for loss, six interceptions and 22 deflected passes in his college career.
With some time in the gym, Lucas might outperform his draft stock.
SF 49ers Round 6 cornerback: Patrice Rene, North Carolina
Patrice Rene had a decent year coming off of a torn ACL in 2019, and has put himself in consideration late on the third day.
Rene has good size at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, but there will be questions over durability and his skill set.
He would be worth considering as a depth option late, however.
SF 49ers Round 7 cornerback: Zech McPhearson, Texas Tech
At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Zech McPhearson may find himself in the unfortunate position of being too small to be an outside corner and not quite quick enough to play in the slot.
However, he did play well at times for Texas Tech in 2020 and had four interceptions and six deflections for the season. He could go undrafted, but might be worth a flier in the seventh round if the SF 49ers feel like he’s worth trying to fit into their defense or on special teams.
