Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be in the discussion for NFL MVP in 2021, but just how deep he is in the odds department is pretty shocking.

Let’s face it, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t going to take home NFL MVP honors once the 2021 season draws to a close.

But Garoppolo isn’t even being viewed as a dark-horse candidate for the accolade this year. Not even as a dark horse to the dark-horse candidates.

If anything, the odds given to him to be recognized as the league’s best player are quite shocking but indicative of what the general perception about him truly is after missing all but five games last year after suffering multiple high-ankle sprains.

According to The Action Network, Garoppolo’s odds to win the 2021 NFL MVP award are a crazy plus-12500. That means if you were to put $100 down on Garoppolo winning the award, and he subsequently did, you’d pull off $12,500 in winnings, according to Niner Noise’s not-so-advanced knowledge of sports-betting.

Wow.

But that doesn’t matter when you put his odds into context. Garoppolo currently ranks No. 37 and somehow sits behind soon-to-be Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff and New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones (both at plus-10000).

The New York Jets’ Sam Darnold and Las Vegas Raiders’ Derek Carr (both at plus-8000) also have higher odds rankings than Jimmy G.

Interestingly enough, 49ers tight end George Kittle also had MVP odds of plus-12500. And to no one’s surprise, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has the best odds at plus-500.

MVP odds confirm general distrust of Jimmy Garoppolo

In all honesty, it shouldn’t be too shocking Garoppolo commands awfully low odds towards winning the league’s MVP award this season. Especially not after suffering two serious injuries over the last three seasons.

But while odds-makers don’t particularly care whether or not a quarterback (or any player, for that matter) will be good over the course of the season, instead purely wondering who has the best shot to win the accolade, it is a bit of a wonder why those same odds-makers didn’t feel they could account for a hopefully fully healthy Niners offense this upcoming season.

Particularly under head coach Kyle Shanahan, who helped Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan earn the award back in 2016.

Granted, Garoppolo isn’t of Ryan’s caliber. And San Francisco does have some pressing offensive question marks heading into the year anyway.

Yet the fact Shanahan’s offense alone doesn’t appear to give Garoppolo any sort of boost over players like Goff, Jones, Carr or even Darnold, particularly the last on that list, is almost laughable.

If anything, those other four should be the combined reason why the odds are a bit silly.
