No. 3: The SF 49ers had many issues in 2020, and this is why Garoppolo is the least of their worries

The SF 49ers’ 2020 season was atrocious. But we already saw hints of the dam breaking back in 2019. The dam is the offensive line.

In 2019 hiding behind a 13-3 record were 36 sacks on Garoppolo. This past season saw a combined 39 on all three quarterbacks, with 11 on Jimmy G in his six games.

Considering general manager John Lynch hasn’t traded or released Garoppolo yet, should mean he realizes QB1 isn’t the issue.

With the retirement of offensive lineman Joe Staley in the offseason, the 49ers’ front five were considerably off all season. Yes, Trent Williams was a nice replacement, but the team was missing the big personality and leadership of Staley.

The SF 49ers’ offensive line might not have been prepared for how often they’d see the blitz. Garoppolo was blitzed 50 times.

Lynch has begun to address Garoppolo’s backups with the re-signings of Josh Rosen and Josh Johnson. Which likely means Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard are out the door.

Along the offensive line and backup quarterbacks, Lynch should be focused on re-signing some critical free agents.
