SF 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t going anywhere in 2021. Niner Noise explains why.

Spoiler alert: The SF 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo aren’t going to part ways in 2021.

Despite everyone with access to Twitter becoming the general manager and throwing mock trades around, Garoppolo should and will be the starting quarterback for the SF 49ers throughout the 2021 season.

If general manager John Lynch wanted to upgrade the quarterback room, he would’ve pulled the trigger on a trade for Matthew Stafford. Or he would’ve already traded for New York Jets Sam Darnold. Heck, if the Houston Texans were actually shopping disgruntled star Deshaun Watson, a deal would’ve been done by now.

Keep in mind, the Texans’ situation isn’t smooth sailing. They’ve said many times they aren’t interested in shipping Watson away and obviously, the quarterback feels differently.

Until Texans general manager Nick Caserio says they’re trading Watson, nothing is going to happen there.

Which helps Garoppolo’s chances of staying in San Francisco.

Before we get into the specifics of why the SF 49ers won’t trade away Jimmy G, let’s just appreciate what he’s been able to do when he’s on the field.

In 2020 he was 3-3 in six starts. During his stretches of play, he never had a losing streak, which his backups suffered. In fact, his two-game winning streak brought the Niners to a 4-3 record when they defeated the LA Rams and New England Patriots.

It might not mean much, but when your backup quarterbacks produce nothing the rest of the way… you have to find the positives somewhere.

So, yes. The SF 49ers had quarterback issues, but there’s bigger fish to fry which is why Jimmy Garoppolo stays in a 49ers uniform in 2021.
