Round 7, Pick No. 228 Overall (from Jets): SF 49ers select linebacker Jamin Davis, Kentucky

With the pick the SF 49ers acquired in last year’s trade with the NY Jets, the Niners beef up one of their positions of strength, linebacker, with Kentucky’s Jamin Davis.

San Francisco already has two excellent starters at the position in Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, and it also boasts a quality backup in Azeez Al-Shaair. But the 6-foot-4, 224-pound Davis is an intriguing hidden-gem prospect who could provide more depth at the position along with some much-needed special teams prowess.

Davis is a true off-ball linebacker who excels most when he’s able to make plays in space. And while he needs some further refinement in his pass-coverage skills, Davis does have good speed for his size.

If that element of his game can be developed, the SF 49ers won’t have any worries about injury attrition striking this position and could even have a long-term replacement for Greenlaw, as having both Greenlaw and Warner on expensive extensions probably won’t be feasible.
