Round 6, Pick No. 196 Overall: SF 49ers select defensive back Trey Dean III, Florida

Offensive linemen and defensive backs. In all honesty, if San Francisco spent all its draft picks solely on those two spots of the roster, it wouldn’t be a terrible thing.

The SF 49ers have already grabbed two defensive backs already, Patrick Surtain II and Joshuah Bledsoe. But they then round out their rookie secondary class with another ideal body type in Florida’s Trey Dean III.

At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Dean has the physique to play at the boundary with some development.

Dean isn’t unlike the Niners’ current reserve defensive back, Tarvarius Moore, in that both players tend to show more prowess when the action is in front of them. This suggests Dean is a better fit for zone-style defenses and potentially as a long-term option at safety even though the bulk of his collegiate experience was on the boundary.

Still, San Francisco has depth and long-term needs at both cornerback and safety heading into 2021 and beyond, so grabbing Dean as a draft-and-develop prospect wouldn’t be a bad move at all.
