Round 5, Pick No. 173 (from Saints): SF 49ers select center Trey Hill, Georgia

If the 2021 NFL Draft is deep with offensive line prospects, San Francisco would be wise to stockpile as many promising up-and-comers as it can.

With the pick the SF 49ers acquired in last year’s deal that sent linebacker Kwon Alexander to the New Orleans Saints, the Niners then look to bolster their interior O-line depth by adding Georgia center Trey Hill.

This was another massive question mark for San Francisco last season, as the starting center, Weston Richburg, missed all of 2020 after suffering a serious knee injury in 2019. Richburg could be a cap casualty this offseason anyway. And his backup, Ben Garland, is also a pending free agent after suffering a season-ending calf injury early last season.

Even if one of those two players returns, adding someone like Hill would bolster the center depth along with supporting both guard spots.

The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Hill isn’t quite as mobile as Kyle Shanahan might like. But Hill has more than enough power to engage properly in run support and can set his feet well in pass protection.

He’d be quite the serviceable interior O-line backup.
