49ers NFL Draft: 5 day-two quarterbacks John Lynch should look at
By Peter Panacy
49ers Target No. 1: Kellen Mond, Texas A&M
Unlike Jamie Newman, Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond did impress enough at the Senior Bowl, taking home game MVP honors and looking as if he had total command of the offense consisting of players he’d only worked with for a few days up to that point.

In fact, that’s one of Mond’s biggest strengths. The 6-foot-3, 217-pound signal-caller has a knack for staying poised and composed within the pocket, regularly evading pressure and sticking with his game plan even when things appear to be lost. And his arm strength is good enough to target most areas of the field without putting himself into too much danger.
His 19 touchdowns thrown against three interceptions last year is a testament to that.
Mond, too, is a dual-threat quarterback with nearly 800 yards rushing the last two seasons and 12 scores on the ground. But it’s not his first option, and he’ll tend to scramble for yards only after exhausting nearly every other option available to him.
There are going to be questions about Mond’s field vision, and his accuracy isn’t always up to par. Those are key reasons why he’ll slip into day two of the NFL Draft and likely be, at best, a late Round 2 selection.
But if the 49ers are considering someone with plenty of developmental potential with the high ceiling of being a quality starter, they could do much worse than grab Mond, particularly if he somehow falls into the third-round compensatory range.
