No. 1: SF 49ers make blockbuster move for Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans have repeatedly said they don’t want to trade their three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Deshaun Watson. Additional reports have said it would take two first-round selections, two second-round selections and two defensive starters to even get the discussions going.

Meanwhile, reports have said the SF 49ers aren’t planning to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo barring a “big swing” like a would-be blockbuster deal for Watson.

The Niners sending off their first- and second-round selections this year and next is a given. That just opens the door. But San Francisco would need to package some players, too, if those earlier reports are correct. And while the Texans may not be overly thrilled with the idea of acquiring Garoppolo, who’d have to waive his no-trade clause anyway, there is the thought he could rekindle his relationship with Houston’s general manager, Nick Caserio, who worked with Jimmy G back with the New England Patriots earlier in his career.

Maybe that’s an added bonus.

Another potential bonus could be the SF 49ers moving defensive end Arik Armstead, who led the team with 10 sacks in 2019 and subsequently signed a five-year, $85 million extension the following offseason.

Getting out from under that heavily backloaded deal would be a boost for the Niners while they’d get their “big swing” acquisition this offseason.
