The SF 49ers could have lost one of their top talent evaluators this offseason, Adam Peters, to one of a number of open general manager roles around the league.

But fortunately, Peters is staying in-house and is receiving a promotion from his previous role as the team’s vice president of player personnel.

In a press release from the team’s website, San Francisco announced it was promoting Peters to an assistant general manager role where he’ll continue to directly support general manager John Lynch, albeit now in a bigger capacity.

“Adam has earned this promotion, which is a result of his hard work and dedication to the 49er Way,” Lynch said in the press release. “He has been a tremendous asset to our team and we look forward to Adam continuing to play an integral role in all aspects of football operations in our quest to compete for championships.”

Peters spent the previous eight years with the Denver Broncos where he developed a closer relationship with Lynch, who was frequently involved with that team’s activities after spending 2004 through 2007 there as a player. Peters was primarily involved in the Broncos’ collegiate scouting department, and the Niners envisioned him playing a similarly important role in San Francisco, too.

In 2017, Peters joined Lynch as a member of the SF 49ers front office and was responsible for many of the successes the Niners have had in the NFL Draft.

Names like tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner and wide receiver Deebo Samuel should easily ring a bell.

Adam Peters’ promotion is beneficial to the SF 49ers

In what will likely include a sizable raise, naming Peters to an assistant general manager role will further guard against him being plucked away by other teams’ GM vacancies in the coming years.

On top of that, Lynch is often perceived less as a talent evaluator (although he does do this) and more of a face of the franchise, something the general manager he replaced, Trent Baalke, didn’t do well.

Peters, meanwhile, will take on a bigger load with the new role and should make Lynch’s job much easier to perform.

Of course, the ultimate goal for Peters, Lynch and the rest of the SF 49ers will be to maximize the talent on the roster and keeping a Super Bowl window open for years to come.
