5 free-agent tackles 49ers could sign to replace Trent Williams

No. 2: Russell Okung, Carolina Panthers
The scheme fit might not be perfect. But Carolina Panthers veteran left tackle Russell Okung has enough time under his pro belt to adjust to the outside-zone style operated by Kyle Shanahan.
At 32 years old, Okung is also getting up there in age, but 2020 showcased his ability to play at a high level. After all, he allowed just three sacks and 13 pressures over 417 snaps at left tackle, and Okung could likely end up playing at least for another two or three more years without too serious a drop-off in production.
There’s very little chance Okung capitalizes on the near-$13 million contract he received in Carolina last season, though. And that bodes well for the 49ers, who could consider him yet another stopgap option to hold the line for a couple of years before someone both younger and cheaper could be brought in.
And if Okung’s pass-protection abilities wind up staying on par with what was seen last season, the Niners wouldn’t have to worry too much about blindside protection being a massive issue in 2021.
