SF 49ers Defensive Line: Carl Lawson

Once your team feels it has enough pass-rushers, it should add another.

San Francisco has an elite one, EDGE Nick Bosa, returning from a torn ACL suffered early last season. But with fellow EDGE Dee Ford dealing with regular injuries and in an unsure status for 2021, both in terms of health and being a cap casualty, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the SF 49ers reinforce their outside pass rush this offseason.

Particularly with the team’s sack leader last year, Kerry Hyder, hitting free agency.

It’s likely the Niners would have to shell out a bit of money for some supportive pass-rushers, and this year’s free-agent class has plenty of names to target. But in terms of value, it might be smart for San Francisco to go after someone like the Cincinnati Bengals’ Carl Lawson.

Lawson, 25 years old, hasn’t put together the overly impressive sack totals as of late, netting a combined 10.5 the last two years while also dealing with some notable injuries during that stretch. Yet Lawson has been effective at generating pressure, and one could figure he’d complement players like Bosa well enough.

Probably on a cheaper deal than some of the other top-name pass-rushers available this offseason, too.
