Round 7, Pick No. 217 Overall (from Lions): Cornerback Chris Claybrooks, Memphis

Original Pick: WR Jauan Jennings (No. 217 Overall)

Remember, this was the pick the SF 49ers acquired from the Detroit Lions for linebacker Eli Harold, and it’s still possible the player the Niners grabbed here, wide receiver Jauan Jennings, becomes a likable commodity.

Yet Jennings spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad and still has a lot of question marks associated with him.

In the vein of trying to reinforce San Francisco’s secondary, the pick here isn’t overly flashy but promising enough. The SF 49ers go with a nickel cornerback, Memphis’ Chris Claybrooks, who could have backed up their starter, K’Waun Williams, right away with the eventual hope of becoming a long-term fill-in should Williams depart in free agency in 2021.

If anything, it would guard against the sheer number of injuries the Niners suffered on defense over the course of last season.
