SF 49ers: Redrafting the entire 2020 NFL Draft class
By Peter Panacy
Round 1, Pick No. 22 Overall (from Eagles): Wide Receiver Justin Jefferson
Original Pick: WR Brandon Aiyuk (No. 25 Overall)
Let’s be clear, Brandon Aiyuk was the correct choice for the SF 49ers towards the tail end of Round 1. Nothing wrong with that selection at all.
Seeing as we can’t go with originally drafted players, though, the Niners have to shake things up a bit to land star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who set a new NFL rookie record for receiving yards with 1,400 with the Minnesota Vikings.
Remember, in this redraft scenario, San Francisco still has two of its fifth-round picks, one of which was traded off to acquire Trent Williams, but it would take a little more than that to move up to the No. 22 spot, which was originally held by the Philadelphia Eagles, to leapfrog Minnesota’s eventual selection of Jefferson.
The SF 49ers also included their fourth-round pick from 2020 to get from No. 31 overall to No. 25 overall for Aiyuk, initially. Tacking on both of those Round 5 selections (Nos. 156 from the Broncos and 176 overall) help, but another 2021 fourth-round selection ensures the Eagles bite.
Now drafting ahead of the Vikings, there’d be no problem pulling in Jefferson, giving head coach Kyle Shanahan his shiny new wide receiver weapon. And one of the league’s best up-and-coming stars.
