Quarterback. Aggies . Kellen Mond. 156. player. 873.

The SF 49ers’ quarterback situation has already been a hot topic this offseason, but at this juncture, it appears that the group will consist of incumbent stater Jimmy Garoppolo and newly re-signed Josh Rosen, and likely a rookie.

Where that rookie will be chosen in the draft varies based on who you ask, with many suggesting the Niners could be in the market for trading up to grab one of the top non-Trevor Lawrence first-round options or there even being a guy like North Dakota State signal-caller Trey Lance available at No. 12.

In this case, we’ll add a late-round option who could be a developmental guy for the team down the road in the form of Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond.

Mond has been an efficient and careful quarterback who threw for 9,661 yards, 71 touchdowns, and only 27 picks in 46 career games, including a 19:3 touchdown to interception ratio as a senior.

And while he still needs some seasoning, Mond had a strong Senior Bowl, finishing 13-of-25 for 173 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort while still managing to be named the MVP of the game.

The downside with taking a quarterback in the fifth round as opposed to the first or second is that it likely means the SF 49ers are set to roll with Garoppolo for at least a few more seasons, and what they choose to do with the quarterback’s contract will tell us a lot there, too. Maybe this is a good move or maybe it’s not, but Mond will certainly be a work in progress and not someone who will press Garoppolo for starting snaps.
