SF 49ers post-Super Bowl 7-round mock NFL Draft
If there is a more obvious hole on the current SF 49ers roster than cornerback, I don’t know what it is.
The good news is the top of the draft is ripe for selecting a potential long-term starter, even if the team elects to re-sign someone like Jason Verrett while bringing back restricted free agent Emmanuel Moseley.
Enter South Carolina corner Jaycee Horn, who along with Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley and Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II, make up a trio of defensive backs who could all crack the top 15.
Horn has the physical attributes teams look for in a modern corner, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing in around 205 pounds, and is a physical and aggressive cornerback who has improved during each of his three seasons at South Carolina.
The knock on him is his consistency as a tackler, something that can be improved upon with time, especially if a few veterans allow Horn time to slowly work his way into the lineup during his rookie season.
And while we don’t know a great deal about exactly what new SF 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans’ scheme will be, Horn fits pretty well with what the team had been doing under Robert Saleh and would translate best into a scheme that uses his physicality as best it can.
Grabbing Horn this early might be a little bit of a reach based on need, but the consensus seems to be that he’ll fit somewhere in the top 15 quite easily, with the SF 49ers being his most mocked draft slot.
Even if Verrett and Moseley both return, Horn would be a longer-term answer at the position, something they’d needed for a few years now.
