SF 49ers free agency: 5 possible landing spots for Richard Sherman
By Peter Panacy
No. 3: Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts may be further away from playoff contention in the wake of quarterback Philip Rivers’ retirement. But aside from that glaring need, Indy’s roster is set well enough to continue competing for a postseason push.
If not in 2021, perhaps as early as 2022 depending on what happens under center.
The Colts are poised to lose two veteran cornerbacks, Xavier Rhodes and T.J. Carrie, this offseason with the former being the more important of the two. Rhodes, coming off his solid one-year deal in Indianapolis, might be worth re-signing. Especially with the Colts now boasting well over $65 million in the wake of Rivers’ retirement — third most in the NFL.
But if Rhodes walks, Sherman could end up being a contingency free-agent plan.
For starters, he’d be able to enjoy some of the other cold-weather destinations that could be more difficult on his body, instead thriving in the dome confines of Lucas Oil Stadium. And on top of that, he’d be able to reunite with a former SF 49ers leader, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, which certainly has to have a selling point.
It might not be the flashiest or most headline-grabbing free-agent move, but the Colts could easily be in play for Sherman’s services this offseason.
