SF 49ers Target No. 2: Trey Lance, North Dakota State

Trey Lance started the season with a ton of push as a top-three3 quarterback in the draft, but after only playing one game in 2020 due to scheduling issues because of COVID-19, his buzz has died down.

Nonetheless, Lance is still one of the best quarterbacks in this class and will likely find himself off the board somewhere in the top 10. Potentially even getting close to the SF 49ers’ range at No. 12 overall.

Out of all the quarterbacks in the class, as gifted as there are, Lance is arguably the most talented prospect. This doesn’t mean he should be drafted before Trevor Lawrence or even Justin Fields. But the tools Lance possesses could make set him up to be an elite quarterback in the NFL. He’s going to take more time to develop than Lawrence or Fields and a lot of his has to do with the fact that he hasn’t played at the same level as those two.

Lance not only wins with his big arm, but he is a legit threat as a runner. In 2019, when he was able to compete in a full season, he amassed 1,100 yards on the ground and added an additional 14 touchdowns to his passing stats.

His running ability could open up the SF 49ers offense in a way we have yet to see.
