SF 49ers Top Play No. 6: Jeff Wilson dominates the Cardinals
Sure, the Week 16 divisional showdown against the Arizona Cardinals lacked drama with the SF 49ers out of playoff contention.
But the Cardinals had everything to play for as they were looking to secure their first playoff berth since 2015 with a win and a Chicago Bears loss. With C.J. Beathard starting in place of the injured Nick Mullens, the Cardinals must have felt confident going into this game.
Yet someone forgot to tell Beathard, Jeff Wilson and the rest of the Niners they weren’t supposed to win this game.
With 2:51 left in the first quarter, Beathard dropped back to find Wilson matched up with Arizona linebacker De’Vondre Campbell underneath in the middle of the field.
Wilson made the catch and raced across the field and into the end zone for a 7-3 SF 49ers lead. It was a similar play San Francisco ran run multiple times against the Cardinals the last two seasons with similar success.
While Wilson’s lone touchdown wasn’t overly epic, it deserves to make this list as a capping-off point where he almost single-handedly dominated Arizona, reaching 183 rush yards and over 200 all-purpose yards in what ended up being a career-best day.
Hats off to Wilson being the spoiler.
