Round 7, Pick No. 194 Overall: SF 49ers select Tyree Gillespie, Safety, Missouri

As we stated earlier, the SF 49ers face some difficult decisions regarding the defensive secondary. With all the free agents, the team will need to replenish some of the losses they most likely will incur in free agency.

With Jaquiski Tartt’s injury history, chances are the front office will let him leave once free agency begins. And while the team has options on the roster in Marcell Harris, Tarvarius Moore, and Jared Mayden, adding another young player to the mix may be in the cards.

Missouri’s Tyree Gillespie has been overshadowed in many ways by the Tigers’ other draft prospect, linebacker Nick Bolton. But he has had a solid season as well, notching 50 tackles (including four tackles for loss), seven pass breakups, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Gillespie’s play has gotten him invited to the Senior Bowl as well. And that is a big deal, especially for a safety. Of the 10 safeties invited last year, eight of them were selected in the draft, including two who were selected in the top 100.

Adding Gillespie to a competition field of Moore, Mayden, and Harris can only enhance the roster. As the saying goes, “Iron sharpens iron.”
