No. 5: SF 49ers draft or sign a new quarterback

Fans may argue the case that NFL Christmas actually comes in January when teams unwrap their new presents under the proverbial NFL Draft tree.

If there’s one bonus to the Niners being “naughty” this season, it’s the reward of higher draft picks. There’s a real chance San Francisco winds up selecting in the top 10, not at pick No. 32 overall, as everyone else originally hoped.

Oftentimes, these gifts are great. Remember when things fell apart in the wake of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s 2018 ACL injury? That directly resulted in the SF 49ers being gifted EDGE Nick Bosa at No. 2 overall the following year.

In 2021, however, the gift could be someone to replace Garoppolo. His contract numbers alone could make him a cap casualty. And even if he stays one more season, it would be wise for the Niners to invest in a rookie quarterback for the long haul.

Or at least another QB who can round out the rest of the quarterback room better than what it was to wrap up the second half of 2020.

Either way, a new quarterback would be a great, shiny new toy for San Francisco fans everywhere.
