SF 49ers: Jerry Rice puts Randy Moss in his place with GOAT response
By Peter Panacy
SF 49ers Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice had the perfect response to Randy Moss saying he, not Rice, was the greatest of all time.
Don’t challenge SF 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice. It won’t work out well for you.
While there are many GOAT arguments across the sports spectrum, such as whether or not LeBron James is better than Michael Jordan in NBA history circles, no real NFL analyst or historian would challenge the fact Rice is the greatest wide receiver to ever play the game. Perhaps the greatest player in football history, period.
But that’s what fellow Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss did recently, saying as much on former SF 49ers wide receiver Terrell Owens‘ Getcha Popcorn Ready podcast:
"I’ll put myself first, I’ll put T.O. second. I would put Jerry probably third or fourth. I’m talking about dominating the game and changing the game of football. I don’t live on statistics because if you live on statistics and live on championships that’s all political. You’ve seen guys released or cut from a team just by a couple words in the media. You’ve seen guys given contracts or you’ve seen guys not given contracts just because of the color of their skin. You’ve got to throw politics out of the game of football, and look at the impact of what each individual was able to make in the game of football."
Much like Jordan responding to criticism, “I took that personally,” on ESPN Films’ The Last Dance documentary, Rice’s response to Moss’ suggestion about who the No. 1 all-time wide receiver is was pretty epic in itself.
Rice joined San Francisco’s 95.7 The Game the Monday after Moss’ comments and offered up a response that’s perfect:
"Well, this is what I tried to say to the fans and say to everyone, it was not about me being The GOAT. I don’t care if I’m the one, the second or third receiver. It was all about me winning Super Bowls for the city of San Francisco, my teammates and my family. I was able to win three Super Bowls. I was MVP. I pretty much hold every record right now and he continues to say it’s political or whatever. If Randy wants to be No. 1, that’s fine. There are so many GOATs. If T.O. wants to be No. 2, that’s fine. But my main thing is it was all about the rings, the championships. That’s why we play the game."
Rice has that edge, too, securing three Super Bowl rings in his legendary GOAT-like career and a game MVP from Super Bowl XXIII.
Moss, meanwhile, never won a Super Bowl.
So it almost feels like that AT&T commercial featuring Heisman Trophy winners from years prior bragging to quarterback Joe Montana, only to generate the most legendary of responses:
Rice’s response to Moss about rings is just as equal to Montana’s scripted response. Nothing more needs to be said.
“Nothing can phase me,” Rice continued. “People can say whatever they want to say. I never left anything on the football field and I was able to bring so much excitement to so many lives just by catching a football. So, I don’t care about all that other stuff. People can say whatever, man.”
There’s no questioning Moss’ impact as one of the most dynamic receivers in NFL history. He, along with Owens, belongs at the very top of the pro football wide receiver hierarchy.
But there’s only one No. 1 wide receiver of all time.
And any other answer other than Rice for that accolade is simply wrong.
