No. 1: SF 49ers Quarterback Nick Mullens

One of the other statements Kyle Shanahan made was being open about his quarterbacking situation.

More from Niner Noise

The last two weeks have done enough to reveal No. 2 quarterback Nick Mullens isn’t capable of effectively leading an offense, at least not consistently enough, as two of his turnovers in Week 14 led directly to Washington Football Team points. With a 3.4 interception percentage on the season — tied for worst in the NFL among qualifiers — it’s painfully obvious now Mullens is little more than a third-string backup.

Unfortunately, the SF 49ers don’t have another decent option in C.J. Beathard, whose 1-9 career record as a starter pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

Yet there’s no sense in keeping Mullens under center, especially considering both he and Beathard are free agents this offseason and the Niners quarterbacking room could look entirely different next season.

If 2020 is going to be Beathard’s last year in San Francisco, and realizing “tanking” might be better for the team’s long-term plans, putting him in to at least shake things up on offense has some merit.

It couldn’t get much worse than Mullens, right?
