The SF 49ers have gone through the equivalent of ‘football hell’ in 2020, and these five stats show just how crazy things have been this year.

While he’ll never blame all the setbacks the SF 49ers have endured this season, head coach Kyle Shanahan’s comments in the wake of his team’s most recent loss, a 23-15 defeat at the hands of the Washington Football Team in Week 14, are awfully telling with regards to just what’s happened to the defending NFC champions this season.

When asked if 2020 was the most frustrating year in his coaching tenure, Shanahan gave a pretty telling response.

“It’s been different, but I think it’s been different for the whole league,” Shanahan said. “So, I’m not sitting here trying to throw a pity party. It’s been different for everybody, but it’s a combination of things that have been a little bit unusual, but I also know when you have no chance and we can play a lot better than we did today.”

The 5-8 Niners probably could have played a lot better if it weren’t for some of the insane pressing circumstances they’ve endured over the entirety of the season, which has been weird for everybody, as Shanahan pointed out.

Yet one could argue no team has gone through more adversity this season than San Francisco. And there are numbers to back it up.

Injuries have affected the SF 49ers more than any other team out there. That’s a big one. But there are even deeper takeaways and crazy stats that tell a much bigger story about what Shanahan and Co. have had to endure this season.

Perhaps these five insane stats will provide a proper epitaph to the Niners for 2020.
