Niner Noise’s resident Aussie breaks down Week 14 for the SF 49ers

  • It’s the home stretch of the year, and the SF 49ers are in absolute need for a win.
  • To lose means playoffs is just about out of reach, a win keeps the SF 49ers in the Wild Card hunt.

Washington isn’t overly tough, but it did upset Pittsburgh last week.

    SF 49ers to receive.

  • Just 10 seconds in, and Deebo Samuel is injured. Unbelievable.
  • Kendrick Bourne will either makes all the catches or drop all the catches.

He’s in a catching mood today.

Using a timeout this early isn’t ideal, but the Niners have had a promising opening drive.

The drive stalls at midfield, a common theme for the SF 49ers in 2020.

Welcome, Alex Smith, I hope you do well but not too well.

Ahkello Witherspoon with a good tackle and Washington will punt right away.

Can the SF 49ers go better on this drive?

  • I don’t care how many times I see a Burger King commercial, that mascot is terrifying.
  • And now Trent Williams is hurt, it’s a curse.
  • We must have sold our souls last year for a great season and the price was EVERYBODY gets hurt in 2020.

It’s a wonder Kyle Shanahan hasn’t tripped over a bench and torn an ACL given how this season is going.

Justin Skule actually stopped paying attention to Chase Young. Why? Why, oh why?

That was… bad blocking. To say the least.

  • The drive stalls, Smith is having a really similar performance to Nick Mullens. If you know what I mean.
  • 53 yard field goal is wide, the score remains 0-0.

And suddenly the Niners are putting together a sneakily good drive.

This has been a great drive for the SF 49ers, it’s been well executed.

Touchdown! Jeff Wilson plunges in and the Niners have the lead!

Smith is having a really bad game, someone else gets to struggle with that for a change.

End of the first quarter, promising signs to keep the season alive.

  • Man, I love everything about Brandon Aiyuk.
  • There’s a Bourne drop.

I think that’s more than catchable.

Can I blame the announcers for that false start?

    I think I will.

Yet another drive stalls at midfield for San Francisco.

  • I love Javon Kinlaw plays.
  • Another short Washington drive, the SF 49ers defense came to play today.

Ugh, more penalties. Clean it up, San Francisco.

And that drive went backwards by about 15 yards.

Washington had a very slow drive into field-goal range again.

I missed it unfortunately as I had to step away.

Field goal is good, 7-3 to the 49ers.

San Francisco needs to put on another score here, Washington is slowly wresting away momentum.

So of course, Wilson fumbles and the SF 49ers recover. Ugh.

Well the defense came up big again, an easy field goal conversion but the Niners still keep the lead.

San Francisco’s drive goes nowhere fast, the offense is simply not even close to playoff readiness.

Two-minute warning, Washington threatening to take the lead before the half.

Jason Verrett interception! Defense comes up big AGAIN!

NOW can the offense please get a touchdown!?

Oh you’re absolutely *expletive* kidding me.

If you’re going to scramble, you can’t hold the ball like that! That is simply ridiculous.

    13-7 to Washington.

I would bench Mullens. I would. He has shown nothing to me, I would rather take a gamble on C.J. Beathard’s athletic ability.

    Another Bourne drop.

    Stone-cold drop.

And then two subsequent Mullens throws that were horrible.

    49ers offense didn’t have a chance.

  • Fred Warner hurt on the first defensive drive of the second half, naturally.
  • Way to not guard the flat on a 3rd-and-1 play San Francisco. Sigh.

Washington driving down the field, and I don’t think Warner would have made a difference.

This is with Dwayne Haskins at QB by the way, not Smith.

How hard is it to stack the box and make Haskins throw for crying out loud?

Good pressure at least to stop the touchdown.

    16-7 to Washington.

Another drive, another quick exit by the offense.

I changed my mind, put Josh Johnson on the field

I don’t even know if he’s dressed for this game, but screw it.

Washington driving down the field again.

Newest SF 49ers injury goes to Kinlaw.

Or maybe he’s just exhausted. Better alternative.

Weird sort of trick play by Washington, well blown up.

Well, the Niners keep getting chances. It’s all on them.

Aiyuk is such a good, good pick.

I mean it wasn’t a catch, but he sold it so well.

Well I had a panic attack when Mullens threw across his body, but it worked.

And then subsequently almost throws a pick.

Slowly but surely, San Francisco are driving down the field.

A rare third down conversion there, but it works.

Horrible throw, picked off, returned to the house.

That’s the ball game right there I think.

Frankly, this is on Shanahan. Mullens should have been benched at halftime.

    23-7 to Washington.

Washington has not scored a touchdown on it’s offense.

Washington has scored more touchdowns off the bad decisions of Mullens than both offenses combined actually.

Mullens is still in, I am in utter disbelief.

Richie James has had a couple impressive catches today, if nothing else.

The Niners are again in a scoring position.

Touchdown! A small toss to Kyle Juszczyk, and the 49ers are in with a chance.

San Francisco has to go for two points here and try to make it an eight-point game.

The conversion attempt to Bourne is good, and it’s only a 23-15 game.

Can the defense build on the momentum?

    Sack! Dion Jordan!

Well, that’s a good start to keep up momentum.

Well, that was an excellent drive by the defense, and the offense has a chance to tie the game.

Here we go, the chance to tie the game for the offense.

Good start with the slant route by Aiyuk.

Good run, but a holding call is going to bring this back.

    That’s going to hurt.

Ross Dwelley made up for that holding call there.

    Good pass by Mullens.

Passed batted at the line of scrimmage and the 49ers have to punt.

INTERCEPTION! DEFLECTION CAUGHT BY JIMMIE WARD!

Ahhh, no, it touched the ground.

    Still, it is fourth down.

Can the 49ers come up with a clutch drive?

God, what poor play-calling, Run, run, short pass.

Do the Niners go for this?

    No, they don’t.

Washington pinned right up against their end zone due to a great punt, but will they have time to get it back?

    False start does absolutely nothing.

SF 49ers using all their timeouts, it’s going to be all or nothing from here on out.

Washington pass… and are just short.

Ron Rivera will challenge, but I think they’ll lose it.

I wonder if Washington considers going for it if it’s fourth down.

    No, they’ll punt.

Some essential punt-return yardage. Every inch counts.

    All or nothing now.

    Two-minute warning, here we go.

Big catch by Bourne… but there’s a flag for holding.

Next. SF 49ers playoff rooting guide for NFL Week 14. dark

I am sick of these *expletive* undisciplined penalties.

And now a horrible drop, and it’s 4thand-12.

It’s caught but short, that’ll be the game.

A disappointing loss, and the SF 49ers are effectively eliminated from playoff contention.
