SF 49ers NFL Draft: 5 day-three quarterbacks John Lynch should look at
By Peter Panacy
SF 49ers Target No. 3: Davis Mills, Stanford
We’re talking about John Lynch here, so the Stanford connection is always going to be something that potentially comes into play on draft day.
Should that be the case, one has to consider the possibility Lynch and the SF 49ers heavily scout Cardinal quarterback Davis Mills, who is finally getting the chance to showcase his talents with Pac-12 football kicking off again after a delayed start due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mills looks the part of an NFL-caliber quarterback. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, he doesn’t offer much of anything in the run game but can easily see over offensive linemen unlike the previous two names on this list.
And he can take a hit, too, which is always a bonus.

Granted, his 2019 totals weren’t eye-popping coming in relief for then-Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello. But there are a number of likable traits suggesting he’ll be a good fit within the Niners offense.
For starters, Mills benefits from a play-action offense, which the SF 49ers employ. And he also has decent enough arm strength to make deep throws. While his accuracy isn’t the best, a scheme presenting open receivers would seem to fit his style and best abilities.
As long as Mills enjoys a clean pocket, he could end up being an efficient quarterback to be had in Round 6 of the NFL Draft.
