Disappointment No. 5: SF 49ers won’t gain ground in NFC playoff picture

The Niners desperately needed a win to pick up some valuable ground in the NFC playoff outlook.

Both the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals lost in Week 13, meaning San Francisco could have gained ground in the NFC West. The Chicago Bears, losers to the Detroit Lions this week, also could have been leapfrogged by the SF 49ers.

Instead, paired with the Niners loss and wins by Detroit and the Minnesota Vikings, the Niners are now the No. 11 seed in the NFC. Bears and Lions losses in Week 14, along with San Francisco figuring out how to beat the Washington Football Team, could bump the SF 49ers back up to the No. 8 seed.

But they’d still be uniformly behind both the Cardinals and Vikings based on tiebreakers, the Cardinals winning over San Francisco in Week 1 and with Minnesota’s better conference record.

Technically, the Niners aren’t eliminated from the playoffs just yet. However, Week 13’s loss meant they failed to take advantage of two division teams losing and the Bears’ recent fall.
